Understanding Philippians 1:6

Understanding Philippians 1:6 provides a brief commentary of Philippians 1:6 and its application for today.

Philippians 1:6

"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6, NKJV).

Philippians 1:6 is a great verse of encouragement for Christians.

As the apostle Paul thought and prayed for the Philippians, he was gripped with great confidence that God would bring to completion the good work He had begun in them.

What was this good work that God had begun in the lives of the Christians at Philippi? As one commentator said, "That good work was their salvation. It may also have included their fellowship and sharing of their bounties with Paul."

Another commentator said, "When God begins a work of salvation in a person, He finishes and perfects that work."

Someone else said, "Believers in Christ are people of the future, a sure future that has already begun in the present." In other words, if God has begun His salvific work in you, then you can be assured that He will complete that work.

As Jesus Himself said, "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to anatch them out of My Father's hand" (John 10:28-30).

Philippians 1:6 still applies today to the Christian. You can be assured that God who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion.
