I have provided a brief summary of a Mother's Day Sermon that I shared with my congregation encouraging them to use Words That Build Up the Family Unit from selected verses in Ephesians 4 and 5.

Words For Building Up The Family Unit
(Ephesians 4 - 5)

You know, the words we speak have a tremendous impact on those who hear us. The Bible says, “He who guards his mouth and his tongue, guards his soul from trouble” (Proverbs 21:23). How many times have we put our foot in our mouth? How many times have we wished we could take back the words that we have spoken, especially the harsh words, the hurtful words, and the humiliating words?

There is an old saying, “Sticks and stones will break my bones but names (or words) will never hurt me.” Can I say unequivocally that is not true? The words we speak have a tremendous impact on those who hear us. That’s why the Bible says, “Whatever you say, say it as unto the Lord” (Col 3:17).

When I was growing up, the Bee Gees were a music group that was sweeping the world with their music and romantic songs. They wrote a song called It’s Only Words. Of course, it’s a love song but it also emphasized the importance of words. Words that build up the family unit are truthful words, uplifting words, forgiving words, thankful words, and Scriptural words. Can I encourage you to use words that build up your family unit, especially as we celebrate Mother’s Day? Remember, whatever you say, say it as unto the Lord.

1. Truthful Words (Ephesians 4:25)
2. Uplifting Words (Ephesians 4:29)
3. Forgiving Words (Ephesians 4:31-32
4. Thankful Words (Ephesians 5:4)
5. Scriptural Words (Colossians 3:16)
